COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

Students gain knowledge and skills for entering careers in automotive service and repairs; parts supply and after-market product installation. Instruction will be delivered in a hybrid format. Whenever possible and appropriate students will complete theory based instruction off campus while logged into a virtual classroom (students that have limited or no internet access will attend classes in person at the school.) When it becomes necessary to perform hands on competencies they will be conducted in the schools Shop/Lab and under all safety and social distancing guidelines determined by the Instructor, CDC, VDOE and BCPS. Instruction and experiences include: the functioning, servicing and repairing of suspension systems, brake systems, automotive electrical systems, fuel systems, primarily.  All other ASE areas of study will comply with ASEEA/VADOE requirements for task sheets and competencies.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

After successfully completing Automotive service technology 1 (8506), students will have completed at least 80% of program competencies established by the VDOE (Virginia Department of Education) and ASEEA (Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation). Students will be able to work hard to complete as many ASE Student Certification tests as possible before continuing to Automotive Service Technology 2 (8507). Students will have a working knowledge of the automotive industry and all the options that await them if they wish to pursue a career in the industry.

MATERIALS:

 

PPE (leather toped, non-slip sole, protected toe work boot) work shirt (T-shirts with logo will be offered for purchase at cost). Safety Glasses (First pair provided by the program, second and all others will be purchased). $30 SkillsUSA dues and a pair of head phones. 

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

 

Completing this 2 year program will prepare students to take the National American Service Excellence (ASE) tests in four areas: suspensions, brakes, engine performance and electrical systems. After two years of automotive technician work experience and having passed these tests, American Service Excellence (ASE) certification can be achieved.  The student will have the opportunity to test in all 10 program areas. Students who qualify will also have the opportunity to obtain the Vehicle Safety Inspection License. (be advised that BCPS staff will never ask for a student’s social security number, however, the State Police will require it to complete the application process)

 

PREREQUISITES:

 

 Aptitude test, Interview process, considerations are made based on base school attendance, GPA, discipline referrals and ability to complete graduation track. 

 

ATTENDANCE:

 

Class attendance is an important aspect of this course. Any student who will be absent on any given school day, for any given reason, will notify instructor via email or Remind PRIOR to the beginning of class. Non-compliance with this procedure will result in the weekly grade (Summative workplace readiness grade) being docked by 10 points per violation. Attendance is governed in the same manner as all other competencies in the program. A required percentage of days attended is required to meet the competency requirement. Noncompliance will result in loss of any ASE credential results.

 

LAB OUTLINE:

 

Students need to wear proper PPE and safety glasses each day when they are working in the Auto Shop Area. A minimum distance of 6 feet will be observed while in the shopand sanitation procedures will be included in the daily clean up requirement.   Keep the shop clean and free of hazards. Report unsafe conditions or injury to teachers. Keep shop area and classroom neat and clean. Clean and return all tools and equipment to their proper places. Follow shop and machine safety rules at all times. Avoid talking to, or otherwise distracting, machine operators. Avoid running, throwing of objects, “horse playing,” and making unnecessary loud noises in the Auto Shop area. Students needs to read and sign Shop Safety Agreement and also follow shop and machine safety rules at all times. If a student doesn’t follow the Auto/Technology rules every day that student will be sent to classroom and will receive 0.  It is the student’s responsibility to maintain ALL combinations to tool box and locker.

GRADING FACTORS:

 

Grading factors will be adjusted according to all individuals IEP. For those students requiring special attention or teaching efforts, every attempt to accommodate their requirements within safety limitations will be followed.

 

CLASSWORK

 Warm-up, Journal, Class participation, notebook check, maintaining all computer log-ins, daily clean-up.

 

 Virtual Classroom expectations

On days when students are not physically present. They will log into a “virtual classroom”. Attendance rules still apply and attendance will be taken. Students will work with the camera on for the duration of the classroom time.

 

ASSESSMENTS

 

Chapter Tests, Quarter Exams, Practical (hands-on) task performance (competency completion), ASE or review questions, weekly workplace readiness assessments, and any projects assigned by the Instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to maintain ALL computer log-ins and combinations to tool box and locker.

 

Extra Credit:

 

During the year there will be opportunities to obtain extra credit. These opportunities take the form of after-hours continuing education seminars provided through vendors. Participation in and volunteering to help at our annual benefit car show. Or any other opportunity as determined by the instructor. Extra credit points will be assigned at the discretion of the instructor and will be applied to the weekly workplace readiness summative evaluation.

 100-90=A

 89-80=B

 79-70=C

 69-60=D

 59-50=F

 

Safety:

 

Because safety is a primary concern in this class, all participants are required to obtain Shop Safety and Environmental Safety certifications administered through the third party verified company SP/2.  A score of 100% on all modules and all safety modules on SP/2, CDX and Electude is required before students are allowed in the Shop/Lab. The instructor reserves the right to require additional training or remove students from the Shop/Lab at any time to maintain a safe environment for all students and guests in the Shop/Lab.
