Practical nursing is a vocation in which the qualified person is prepared to provide nursing care for patients in relatively stable situations with a minimum amount of supervision from the registered nurse and to function as an assistant to the registered nurse in more complex nursing situations. The practical nursing program is 18 months in length. The first nine months of instruction is received at Bedford Science and Technology Center. The high school student will receive three units of high school credit for the first year. The remaining nine months of study are at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Students will have assigned learning experiences in the care of medical, surgical, pediatric, and obstetric patients and newborn infants.
Graduates of the school are eligible to take the State Board Examination for a Practical Nursing license.
High school applications are accepted each year from November 1st through the last business day of December. Adult applications are accepted each year from November 1st through the last business day of January. Applicants are to download applications and all supporting documentation from the Bedford Science & Technology Center website.
All required paperwork must be printed, completely filled out, and mailed to Bedford Science & Technology Center no later than the last business day of December for high school students and January for adult applicants. Reference forms should be made by those in a professional capacity education or employment not family members or personal friends. All applicants are responsible for ensuring that their application is complete, according to the checklist.
Testing services for entrance is administered at BSTC ( Bedford Science & Technology Center located at 600 Edmund Street, Bedford, Virginia) and applicants will be notified by mid January for high school students and adults by mid February of testing dates. Testing is provided by ATI Nursing Services, applicants will take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) and can find more information related to the test at www.atitesting.com.
Final selection will be made by the admissions committee and applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by mail by the end of February for high school students and March for adults.
