The Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a program offered at the Bedford Science and Technology Center to students in grades 9-12 from all three base schools.  The program teaches students character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, and diversity. It is a cooperative effort between the Army and Bedford County Public Schools to produce successful students and citizens, while fostering a more constructive and disciplined learning environment in the base schools. The outcomes of the JROTC program are students who:

act with integrity and personal accountability as they lead others to succeed in a diverse and global workforce

engage civic and social concerns in the community, government, and society

graduate prepared to excel in post-secondary options and career pathways

make decisions that promote positive social, emotional, and physical health

value the role of the military and other service organizations

With the school’s support, the JROTC program achieves these outcomes by using a modern, up to date, student centered curriculum and a variety of activities in and out of the classroom. The curriculum consists of education in citizenship, leadership, social and communication skills, physical fitness and wellness, geography, and civics.  Curricular and extracurricular activities include JROTC Leadership Challenge and Academic Bowl (JLAB), Raider Challenge physical fitness competitions, Drill and Ceremony instruction and competition, color guard teams, air rifle safety and marksmanship, and community service activities.  Weekly wear of the Army JROTC uniform and regular participation in physical fitness activities during class are required for successful completion of the course.   Students who complete the full four year course are eligible for promotion immediately upon enlistment into the military. This course is recommended for students interested in the following careers: management, business administration, politics, law enforcement, emergency services, the uniformed services (any branch), corrections, and further education.
