Course Description:
Building Management is a hands-on program in which emphasis is placed on the development of skills in various building and grounds management/ maintenance duties that include the following: care and use of interior cleaning equipment and materials used to maintain a facility. General building maintenance and repair which include minor carpentry, electrical and plumbing repair. In addition, grounds care and maintenance which include mowing, trimming, landscaping and gardening are taught. Special emphasis is given to the development of the interpersonal skills that allow students to be prepared to work in individual and team environments while displaying workplace readiness skills. As well as being taught to take pride in work that they perform, students that are able to appropriately demonstrate these skills may earn the right to participate in job shadowing, internships, and entrepreneurship experiences when available. The course includes an industry credential examination that earns the student a certification in the Workplace Readiness Skills for the Commonwealth. Students also have the opportunity to earn an OSHA 10 Hour General Industry card which demonstrates the students’ knowledge of safety in the workplace which can offer them greater employment opportunity and starting salary. This course is recommended for students interested in the following careers: Custodian, Environmental Sciences, Landscaper, Maintenance Worker, Groundskeeper, Housekeeping, Apartment Maintenance Technician, etc.
